What future could we build?
1. What we’re seeing
A few of the latest signals we are tracking.
Floating Wetlands Reduce Wastewater Emissions
For the Buffalo-Niagara region, integrating floating wetlands into aging wastewater infrastructure provides a low-cost, high-impact solution to mitigate the emissions from legacy lagoons located along the Buffalo and Niagara River corridors.
Autonomous Drones Disrupt Ground Logistics
For Buffalo, the rise of autonomous drone logistics offers a transformative opportunity to bypass the region’s aging highway infrastructure and notorious winter-weather road delays that frequently disrupt local supply chains.
Industrial Buffer Zones Support Biodiversity
For Western New York, the repurposing of nuclear exclusion zones like those surrounding the Nine Mile Point and Ginna facilities offers a strategic opportunity to reconnect the fragmented ecological corridors of the Lake Ontario shoreline.
2. Explore what could happen.
Scenarios help us to explore multiple futures that Buffalo may need to prepare for.
The Deprescribing Capital
New York’s single-payer system pays for outcomes, so Buffalo becomes the first city to treat too many prescriptions as a public health problem. A medication-review service on the Medical Campus, plus longevity technology adapted from pro sports and youth injury programs, turns the East Side’s neighborhood health hubs into a model for healthy aging. The open question is whether the system, and residents’ trust in it, can hold.
The Gorge Circuit
The world’s top eVTOL racing series finishes its season over Buffalo’s Outer Harbor and the Niagara Gorge, drawing a new aerospace cluster to a city with a century of aircraft-building behind it. Delivery drones and digital rail keep moving when lake-effect snow closes the roads. But the noise falls on some neighborhoods while the benefits go to others.
Sacred Ground Becomes the Neighborhood Commons
Buffalo stops treating cemeteries and shrinking parishes as problems to manage and starts treating them as shared ground. Burial grounds become biodiversity reserves, and former churches become community centers with indoor farms downstairs and conversations about dying, grief, and care upstairs. The result may be a distinctive Buffalo institution, or a patchwork that differs from one neighborhood to the next.
3. What it means
Synthesis helps us to understand why signals matter.
4. Where it’s pointing
Yearly reporting shows how individual signals connect to larger patterns of change across the region.
5. Buffalo 2050
What future do we want to build?
Buffalo 2050 is a living long-range vision for the region, informed by the signals we track, the futures we explore, and the people who call Western New York home. It will evolve as conditions change and our collective understanding of the future grows.
